Avian Care Specialist

About the Wildlife Center

The North Florida Wildlife Center is a nonprofit zoological facility dedicated to wildlife conservation through public education, the propagation of rare and endangered species, and habitat restoration. As a developing institution, we work closely with AZA-accredited facilities and align our standards with those recognized as the gold standard in animal care, conservation, and education. Position Summary

The Avian Care Specialist is responsible for the daily husbandry, care, and welfare of the Wildlife Center’s bird collection, with additional support across the broader animal care team as needed. This role is key to maintaining high standards of animal care, habitat quality, and guest experience.

This is a hands-on position best suited for individuals who are proactive, detail-oriented, and take pride in maintaining high standards.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide daily husbandry for a diverse collection of avian species, including diet preparation, feeding, cleaning, and habitat maintenance

  • Conduct routine health and behavioral observations and maintain accurate records

  • Assist with animal handling, shifting, crating, and restraint as needed

  • Assist with training of ambassador birds

  • Support enrichment and foundational training using positive reinforcement

  • Maintain clean, safe, and functional aviaries and behind-the-scenes spaces

  • Maintain a high level of habitat presentation and attention to detail in all animal areas

  • Assist with exhibit maintenance, improvements, and general facility projects

  • Follow all protocols, schedules, and safety procedures consistently

  • Report any animal welfare or safety concerns immediately

  • Assist with transports, supply pickups, and other operational needs

  • Participate in guest interactions, including tours, educational experiences, and encounters

  • Support and guide volunteers, maintaining clear expectations and standards

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • At least one year of experience working with animals in a professional or structured setting, or equivalent hands-on experience

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Ability to lift 40+ lbs and perform physically demanding work

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Strong reliability and time management

Preferred

  • Experience working with birds or in an avian-focused role

  • Experience in a zoological facility, wildlife center, or similar setting

  • Degree in zoology, biology, wildlife science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

  • Clear communication and teamwork

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving ability

  • Ability to retain and apply new information

  • Confidence interacting with guests

  • Ability to work independently

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting

  • Outdoor work in heat, humidity, cold, rain, and insects

  • Exposure to animal waste, cleaning chemicals, etc

  • Ability to safely work around potentially dangerous wildlife

Schedule & Expectations

  • Position averages 30–40 hours per week, based on operational needs

  • Weekend and holiday availability required

  • Schedule may vary based on seasonal demands and Wildlife Center operations

Guest Services Associate

Guest Services plays a critical role in shaping how visitors engage with the Wildlife Center, from first impression to final interaction. Position Summary

The Guest Services Associate is a forward-facing, mission-critical role at the Wildlife Center.

This position directly impacts guest experience, revenue, and overall perception of the facility. From check-in to departure, Guest Services sets the tone.

We are seeking driven individuals who communicate clearly, take pride in high-quality work, and are ready to contribute to a growing Wildlife Center.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Welcome and check in guests professionally and efficiently

  • Answer questions and assist with bookings

  • Ensure every guest has a positive, memorable visit

  • Operate the register with accuracy across all transactions

  • Promote admissions, encounters, merchandise, and memberships

  • Encourage donations by communicating the Wildlife Center’s mission

  • Share accurate, engaging information about animals and conservation

  • Assist with tours and guest interactions as needed

  • Maintain cleanliness and presentation of all guest-facing areas

  • Ensure spaces consistently reflect the Wildlife Center’s standards

  • Assist with events and daily operations

  • Accept and organize deliveries

  • Work effectively with staff and volunteers

Qualifications

Required

  • 1+ year experience in customer service, retail, hospitality, or similar

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

  • Comfortable handling money and basic computer systems

  • Availability on weekends and holidays

Preferred

  • Experience in a zoological or attraction-based setting

  • Sales or upselling experience

  • Interest in wildlife and conservation

Skills & Competencies
